Sympathy for the Devil

September 18, 2006 | 20 Comments

At first I assumed that Dawn Eden was being overgenerous in her defense of Feminsting and BushvChoice blogger Jessica Valenti. But however much I reject certain aspects of Valenti’s worldview, I must concede that the attempts to demean her efforts and flufferize her reputation are reprehensible.

I have closely followed both of Valenti’s blogs for over a year. She is as serious and intelligent a political blogger as any. However misguided I believe her to be, she is always informative and certainly conducts her blogs with more dignity than I did mine for most of its run. To dismiss what she does at Feministing as breastblogging is nonsensical. From what I can tell (particularly from listening to the podcast), that skin-deep assessment is based on little more than a review of the blog’s name and logo, and even then it makes no sense whatsoever.

For more on the controversy, read Valenti’s response and the accompanying link collection.

Boy, you just never quit do you RA? Again with the mystifying soulful end times Jesus is your savior for three easy payments of 9.95 babble. Just give it up already. Change your site title to “the Theist”, and be done with it. Enough lith the loopty loop jeeskin’ around.

What’s italicized may not apply to the topic, but I figure now that it’s trendy to rave on the RA himself, I figure why not. :P

    Well somebody’s gotta do it!

Good post RA. I couldn’t agree more.

It amazes me that with the glut of pertinent, interesting and religion-based stories in the media this week, THIS is the boring meaningless nonsensical shit on which you choose to focus.

Hmmm. I would have supposed that a blogger could write about whatever he wants. I don’t read posts that are on topics I have no interest in but have have never felt the need to scold the blogger for failing to engage my interest.

However, I do think this particular situation with Jessica is a tempest in a bra cup and unworthy of the attention given to it.

I would like to see RA discuss those loving parents in Maine who kidnapped their daughter yesterday (or the day before), tied her up, threw her in the car and headed off to NY to force her to have an abortion. Talk about weird stories…

RA is probably more interested in the opposite.

but from what you posted lily, all I can say is: what fucked up parents! guess they’re not “pro-choice”

Yeah the father was probably an atheist and the parents couldn’t bear the thought of their daughter raising an atheist antichrist baby ;P

Blogger fights are funny. But a blogger fight between two chicks talking about boobs. roar!

No, Lily, you have plenty of other outlets for your “scoldings.”

LOL. When I can’t go to sleep fast I just have to read one of the RA’s posts and then I can go to sleep really easy.

The impression was based on three things:

    1. The mudflap girl on the logo, which Althouse probably didn’t even realize was giving the bird (I never did, I thought she had her finger raised like she was making a point).

    2. The picture on the shirt advertisement, featuring the logo stretched over the model’s chest. (I don’t know if Althouse noticed that the shirt is somewhat shear and the model is braless.)

    3. A frontpage post featuring a close-up shot of a female chest.

Honestly, I had the same question as Althouse the first time I saw the blog: Is this really consistent with someone whose main beef is with the objectification of women? It’s not to say she doesn’t have interesting stuff on her blog, or that the images are the main thing. Still, calling it “irony” seems a bit odd to me. To me, irony would be to have a normal looking girl sitting in that position and giving the bird, not the image she has.

Ironic or not, I’m sure the images dramatically increase her traffic. As I said to her, I think the question is whether she considers this a pro or a con.

Now, now Prof. Chaos, I only scold those capable of better. Not the mentally challenged.

Jahrta: I can’t even imagine what possessed those “parents”! Like I said, it is a weird story. At a minimum D-fish has it right; they aren’t pro choice!

And here is a typical primate response:

    F*K that — they’re just jealous. She’s HOT!

Here is a good report on one of RA’s friends, Bill Napoli of South Dakota.

HA HA – great interview …. so only if the girl is very religious and she had remained a virgin and she planned on saving herself for marriage could their be an exception to their draconian laws !!!

And how many time does one have to say “brutally raped” before we get the point …. what a nutcase.

Thanks for the link … that was great.
