Even without laws, society would be self-governing shunning murderers, thieves, etc.

Laws merely imply that a punishment is possible.

This is wonderful! At last we have positive proof that RA’s logical skills won’t improve with time.

Laws are formal rules for interacting with other entities. Some societies don’t have codified or written laws, and yet are still able to function. The ability of humans to feel empathy with others curbs senseless violence and disorder. We evolved to be members of a coherent group, our survival dependent on the survival and well-being of each and every person. Sometimes laws just get in the way of practical interactions, and are to be questioned as any absolute should be.

I have to agree with Viole, I’m pretty sure this contradicts other things that RA has said about morality.

Without secular legal systems, we would all be subjected to the laws of religion. Take your choice. -Thorngod.

With or without law, all things are permitted–including retribution.

I agree with mookie, except for the “each and every” part. Our survival is dependant on the well being of a large enough amount of the group.
