Jews Behaving Badly

October 30, 2003 | 24 Comments

Another riot in Brooklyn, from today’s New York Post:

A holy war between two feuding Brooklyn Hasidic groups erupted outside a religious school in Williamsburgh yesterday as more than 150 students tried to storm a religious school closed by a rival faction.

The school for recently married men, known as a kolel, was closed for the second straight day yesterday morning when the students arrived and were met by security guards and German shepherds.

Then, all hell broke loose.

“Someone said,, ‘We’ll push our way in, and that’s it,” said one witness, who asked not to be named. “That’s what we did.”

Another witness described a rebellion of “screaming and yelling” at around 9:30 a.m. as he approached the locked school.

“It’s a fight between the people in the community,” he said. Police officers were called, but no arrests were made and there were no injuries. Police sources described it as an “internal fight.”

The attempted shuttering of the kolel is the latest chapter in an ongoing saga between two partisan camps in the Satmar Hasidic community

Let’s blame religion for the crazy things people do, shall we? By atheist logic, religion is the destruction of rationality and natural law, right? There are suicide bombings in some part of the world almost every day now claimed to be the actions of “Holy War”. Did God make the bomb? There are riots like the Hasidic Jews had every month between opposing factions. Did God raise a fist? There are shootings of innocent people every day in America. Did the gun do it? Let’s blame the gun for Lincoln’s and Kennedy’s death and the car for Princess Diana and Charles. No, I don’t think that’s logical or moral to do so. The only one in THE ATHEIST VIEW we can blame for HUMAN actions, good or bad, is THE HUMAN WHO DID THEM. Not the God who made him. America has enough scapegoats, we don’t need egocentric, scared atheists blaming the problems of the world on religion. Hitler did that. Remember how we handled things? Atheists do believe in God…themselves.

To address one part of your comments: “Did God raise a fist?” A rhetorical question implying that, “No, god didn’t raise a fist.” But…(sigh)…god is all-powerful, right? Therefore, any fists that get raised are his responsibility. As for Hitler, he considered Christianity to be “Institutionalized failure”. By this he meant REAL Christianity, not the standard hypocritical kind.

Paul: I don’t think you understand — this isn’t a theological issue. Rather it’s one of equal treatment under the law. Let me illustrate: if one person assaults another because he is motivated by a stupid and crazy and irrational motivation, let’s say jealously, racism, homophobia or some political nonsense, we would say it doesn’t matter. The perp should be held accountable as any other. In this particular case Raving was simply pointing out that the religious groups were getting a pass (e.g., being regarded as ‘more equal than others’, to use an Orwellian term) merely because they are strongly affiliated with a religious sect. To state it more simply: if religious feelings comprise your motivation for a crime, you shouldn’t be held any less accountable. Sadly this is not the case. IRONICALLY, atheists are held to a higher moral code of conduct than are believers.

    Paul, baby….check your sources….
it was diana and dodi….charles is alive and still doing camilla….
as for the rest of your post, you don’t seem to realize that religion is used by religionists (believers in sky gods) to justify their antisocial behavior.
i did it for god/god asked me to/god commands me to/blah god blah, and presto…protection from receiving whatever penalty that would otherwise would fall on the rest of us…

    so, read again….

This really happened to my family on Friday (Halloween night), 2003. We ordered two large pizzas from Pizza Hut Delivery. The pizza guy comes to the door with the pizzas and before he knocks; he sets the pizzas down on the porch, goes to his car again and comes back with something else in his hands. We thought it was the cheese sticks he went after. What he handed our daughter was the food and a brand new unopened paperback version of the Here

    Paul:

No, it goes more like: “Let’s blame religious people for the crazy things they do in their religion’s name.” However, as noted above, it’s really not the topic at hand.

By atheist logic, religion is the destruction of rationality and natural law, right?

Atheist logic? If there were such a subset of reasoning, I’d use it to point out that religion is often conceived of as a move away from these things, yet that’s hardly an atheist position. I’ve heard more than a few Christian voices over many months claim the religious (and other) beliefs of a well known group of Muslim fundamentalists are irrational and wrong. One might say they see that religion as “destructive to rationality and natural law.” Must be relying on their own form of atheist logic…

    Atheists do believe in God…themselves.

Really? Then I proclaim every day to be a day of rest. And those who ignore my One Commandment will be dropped in the Universal Deep Fat Fryer for all eternity. Or at least until I tire of all the screaming.

PhalsePhrophet: If you’re open to ideas, may I suggest getting your hands on a crapload of small Pizza Hut boxes (or equivalent). Then every day drop off one box at that Pizza Hut, with a few pages of the Here’s Hope Bible taped to the top. If you’re not up for being totally mysteriousness about it, place a note in the boxes stating you’ll stop “delivering” them when the guy who gave those pages to your daughter is dealt with appropriately.

There’s always Plan B: paste the pages on every delivery vehicle in the lot. But you ‘ll need a lot of paste, and a certainty you won’t get caught in the act. Because it’s sort of illegal, you know.

15lbs? You the only one eating at your house?
